Mobile Broadband

By Jay Webster

When it comes to working on the move, innovations in modern technology mean there are a great deal of options available to us, which allows us to conduct our business on the move. Connectivity is key and when it comes to running a business, allowing your employees to work on the move can make a real difference to your productivity and the ability of both you and your clients to contact them as needed.

One innovation that is helping businesses to function in a mobile environment is the introduction of mobile broadband. Mobile broadband is available to almost anyone, regardless of where you are located around the UK. Mobile broadband is built upon the mobile telephone network and you can easily access mobile broadband anywhere where there is a 3G or 2G connection, which is around 97% of the UK.

A "dongle" or mobile broadband modem is the most popular way of connecting to the internet this way and wherever you are located, this connection is used with a very simple USB connection into the port of a regular computer or laptop. The search for 3G reception is then conducted through the modem which taps into a mobile telephone line and transfers any internet data as necessary.

Far more expensive than traditional broadband, mobile broadband can be very costly if you don't stay on top of your data usage. Download limits are very important in mobile broadband and far smaller than you would commonly expect. Unlike traditional broadband, you will generally find that 5GB is the highest download limit that will be available to you and in many cases this will come at quite a high price.

When it comes to business use, the low download limit of a mobile dongle is not really important as many businesses do not require a great deal of data. Checking emails and surfing the internet in general do not require large amounts of data so if you are after a more flexible approach to the internet this could be the answer for you.
