The Fishing GPS

By Glene Kaene

Do you want to catch a lot of fish? Of course you do! If you are like me, you want to have all of the latest and greatest equipment. I get very competitive with my friends and family. Maximum fish count is important in my book, so investing in the top tech is a priority.

Finding fish was difficult back in the day. You would have to test a bunch of areas or ask the locals where the best fishing spots are located. Not anymore, you can find the fish in realtime, with your own portable fishing GPS system. Locating fish is extremely easy these days.

Using many satellites high above us, hanging in orbit, the fishing GPS system will record your favorite fishing locations. You can save them in realtime, so you can return to the exact spot in the future. Also on some of the models, you can punch in some coordinates of a location you want to explore. If you go online, some other anglers can share their favorite spots.

Once you get the hang of it, you will start to use all the features. One of my favorites is the waypoint. You can mark out your path, and keep track of exactly where you have been and the time of each location. Depending on the model or make, you can get even more details of your route.

Often I get bored with plotting out my own route. If you are like me, go online and update your device. Most of the high quality fishing GPS units will allow you to download the current maps and waypoints. That way you can stay up to date on your surroundings. This is also good so you do not get lost.

Just like most consumer electronics, you get what you pay for. I saved up and got a top of the line model for $350, and love all the features that it offers. Obviously, you do not need to spend that much. My cousin picked up one last week for under $100. If you are good at shopping around, you can get a good deal.

Back when the first fishing GPS units came out, they did not have a large screen. The current models have massive screens. Which is great, as you do not have to strain your eyes when looking at them. Look for a model that can be mounted in your boat, so you do not have to hold it in your hand.

Modern fishing GPS devices are also recommended for the keeping because they are more accurate when it comes to fish finding with an accuracy of three meters as opposed to the fifteen meters accuracy of older devices. Higher accuracy means that you can locate the fish quicker and spend more time catching fish. No matter what types of fishing GPS systems you choose, Fishing GPS units of just about any kind help a lot more than having none at all.
