iPhone 5 Release - Disappointment Galore?

By James Kamironnlyer

The much hyped and anticipated iPhone 5 was launched on September 12. Many analysts and experts touted it as a disappointing launch mostly because of the fact that just about every detail about the hardware was leaked weeks ago, and Apple had already given us all the scoop as far as the OS goes at the WWDC.

It's been more than a month since the phone has launched and beyond the initial impressions, people have had time to judge the phone for what it is. Guess what? Many people have come to like the phone after using the phone on a regular basis. The very phone that was touted as disappointing has become the best phone ever created by Apple. People have started appreciating the craftsmanship, the classic design of the phone. When everyone thought it was near impossible to outdo the iPhone 4's design, Apple did exactly that. Everyone, as far as the phone's hardware is concerned, is impressed.

But, is it beyond any criticism? Definitely not. The OS still has a long way to go. Android, though it struggled to catch up with the competition for a long while, has zoomed past the iOS in the last year or so. They boast of far more useful features and you can, broadly speaking, do a lot more with a smartphone this capable. With new versions launched annually, there is little to worry. As it is usually the case, Apple will perfect the phone in the next iteration; the software, too, will most likely be enhanced to support the hardware.

As far as the build quality goes, the phone is unmatched. The screen size has been increased and that was coming with a number of phones boasting of much bigger screen sizes. There are benefits, too, as the larger screen size allows you to do more. When the original iPhone was launched, the screen looked large but in the last few years, with phones like Samsung Note hitting the market, people saw the benefits of larger screens. Most of the apps need to start taking advantage of the larger screen size and over the next year, you will see that happening.

It doesn't end there though; there are other problems. The widely anticipated Maps application was launched but it would be an understatement to say that it was a disappointment. It's a known fact that maps require a lot of accurate data. Google had built up a lot over the last eight years or so. The Apple Maps is definitely lackluster in this area-there is a massive scope for improvement.

The problems, thankfully, aren't hardware related. Software can always ship a better version, more capable. The hardware is pretty impressive, perhaps the best out there. The software, unfortunately, isn't very capable in it's current version. It won't stay like this forever though. The next iterations will take better advantage of the screen size and for this reason, I'd say that purchasing the iPhone 5 is completely worth it. It's the best phone you'd ever hold in your hands and you won't regret the purchase.
