Considerations Regarding To 4G Mobile UK

By Beau Harrold

The coverage of mobile towers that offer phone and data is vast these days, blanketing most of the western hemisphere. British people were among the first to gain from the new technology of 3G around a decade ago, but they are now among the last to gain access to 4G, falling behind North America and the rest of western Europe. There have been numerous problems with 4G mobile UK, which has significantly slowed the scheduled roll-out.

Polls done in the UK show that a great majority of adults advocate creating and increasing 4G mobile coverage in more areas. Citing matters such as keeping up with trading rivals in other parts of the country, 82% of the adults polls advocate the conception of new 4G coverage. Nevertheless, whether the polled population knew about the potential issues involved is not certain.

4G simply means 4th generation. At the moment, 4G appears to imply the bandwidth at 800 and 2100Mhz frequencies. These are the best frequencies for the purposes of mobile providers. However, the 800Mhz band is considerably better at building penetration and distance than the 2100Mhz band, but is currently being utilised by several other devices.

One likely problem relates to television signal boosters. If a 4G tower goes in close by someone with a television signal booster, the signal could be destabilised and that household could lose all access to free channels. This could have an effect on up to 10% of the population, which is millions of people. Filters that endeavour to impede this can be used, but they are not wholly effective.

Other potentially impacted services include pay TV and digital television, as well. Of course, as these are paid services people are free to switch to other options. Nevertheless, the companies that run these services are not exactly thrilled with the prospect of being forced to make major alterations or go out of business, so they have been persistent voices against rolling out the current incarnation of 4G.

One of the things suggested and started to be carried out was auctioning off the spectrum. Companies or businesses that wanted to use a frequency could buy the rights to do so. However, some of the companies that would be impacted have been holding up the process, apparently hoping for a court verdict that they can use to their advantage. Many of the participants are cellular providers.

Trials with 4G are in progress in a number of cities in the UK by several mobile providers. Nevertheless, they are not using the discussed frequencies at this time. The reason that the frequencies are so contested is that they give bigger areas of coverage with less towers, and improved penetration of buildings. Thus, everyone wants the 'best' frequencies.

It appears that 4G will be coming to the UK, but it sure seems like it's slow getting here. For now, the big companies are battling it out in a war of business deals, court dates and auctions. 4G mobile UK may cause a few short-term issues, but most people are for the introduction, which will offer much better capabilities in the long term.
