In Considering The Readiness Of Emergency Communication Equipment Pennsylvania Will Have Similar Concerns As Other States

By Rebekah Alford

Where comes to concerns about the preparedness of their emergency communication equipment Pennsylvania is higher list of cities that have to take these considerations into account. It is important that the proper functioning of this equipment be taken very seriously. This is especially the case of a state like Pennsylvania with important cities like Philadelphia.

Many different components exist with respect to emergencies in the processes involved in preparation. Two primary components that are taken into account by professionals involved in the planning. Both systems are important in ensuring that the emergency is responded to as effectively as possible.

The first of the systems is the notification system. This system refers to the collection of processes that facilitate the broadcast of information to people about an event that is either occurring currently or going to happen soon. Notification system may be composed of such avenues as twitter or e-mail or text messages. Some of the events that systems are used for include tornadoes tsunamis etc. The primary characteristic of these communications is that they are one-way communications.

The other system involved in the process is the communication system. While the same tools are often utilized in the communication system the difference is that this is a two-way process. Another distinguishing characteristic of the system is that it focuses on offering detailed information rather basic notification of an event.

In the process of making sure that that these systems are functioning to the best of their ability there are many factors that need to be taken into consideration. One of the tools that states use to ensure that they're as prepared as possible is a review of the experiences of past events. Such reviews serve as learning tools that can help states determine to what to do and what not to do in the case of an emergency.

One such case is that of the attacks that happened at the world trade center in New York. In this case there was a marked overload of telecommunication systems. This resulted in a congestion of phone networks throughout the entire east coast. Communications between emergency personnel were hampered due to a lack of interoperability between the various departments. This failure of communication systems resulted in the death of firefighters who were not able to receive the necessary communication from their stations.

Yet another absolute failure of the systems occurred when the London subway bombings happened. By 10 am the phone networks had broken down. There was also complete failure of the radio systems that would otherwise have been used to communicate between the trains and emergency controls. These radio systems were out of date and completely useless. As a result of this event and the failures that occurred there were measures that were instituted to fix the problem. One of these was the requirement of digital radio that was usable underground.

When evaluating their emergency communication equipment Pennsylvania can learn from such case studies in order to ensure better preparedness. It is a significant responsibility and many factors need to be taken into account when determining the best equipment for the systems. It is also one that should never be taken lightly and only be undertaken by the most qualified professionals
