Understanding Cloud Services: Cloud Storage and Cloud Backup

By Bryant S. Cole

There are a lot of cloud storage services out there. Because of this, it can be difficult finding the right one for you. As long as you take some time to sit down and compare and contrast these various services, it will be much easier to find the service that is geared toward fulfilling your personal needs.

Cloud backup is a very important piece of the cloud storage puzzle. Cloud backup refers to the process of having your data updated. This means not just saving files in one folder on your computer but instead having them backed up to a remote server on a regularly scheduled basis.

There is usually a schedule involved with cloud backup. This means choosing when exactly your computer will be backed up on a timely basis, especially so you can schedule the backup for when you aren't using the computer. Data can be backed up for as long as the user chooses, generally in periods of up to 30 days at a time before it is updated. Files stored in a cloud backup will not be simply encrypted. They will have to be restored so that you can access them when you need them again.

Files saved on a cloud service will be saved as you save them to your hard drive. This means you'll have full access to them via a quick download. This is a great option for users who only use cloud services to store copies of important files such as PDF documents for quick and easy access. Cloud storage services will keep all of your scanned documents in a secure location. You can also back up all of your family pictures, music, and video files on a cloud server. Plus you can have access to all of these files regardless of where you are and as long as you can connect to the web.

In business, using a cloud backup service can really save the day if there is some type of disaster. Some will allow for servers or a PC to be fully backed up and then all of the data can be put on another computer. It means that a business can be returned to an up and running status in record time. The replenishment of data can be as fast as just a few hours, even if the original computers, laptops or servers are unable to be fixed or have been stolen..
