Is Asterisk 11 the Best Yet?

By Saul Saresi

Asterisk 11, the latest version of the renowned PBX open source software has just been released complete with a number of new and improved features and functionality, whilst still retaining the same tried and trusted framework which has helped to carve it a niche all of its own.

But for those of you not so in-the-know with what it is, allow me to give you a quick background guide. It is open source software similar to Linux - meaning that the software can be developed and updated by people all around the world, in order to help improve the software's functionality. It was first developed by Mark Spencer and operates as a Private Bank Exchange (PBX).

Although the software operates in a similar way to other PBX systems in that it enables connected telephones to contact one another, the main difference is that it is open source software and as such can either be purchased or acquired and used for free.

One of the shining new features offered by the latest version is the support offered for the software's Web RTC (Real Time Communication) links, enabling users to make phone calls directly from their web browsers.

"Asterisk 11 will become, i believe, one of - if not the - defining technologies that allows the promise of Web RTC to become a reality" says the senior editor of Internetnews.com, Sean Kerner.

Other new features include a set of integrated technologies for establishing live media streams for software agents running behind firewalls, known as 'Ice, Stun & Turn' along with 'Motif'; a new channel driver specifically for supporting the Jingle protocol and 'Google Talk'.

Regardless of the level of innovation and increased performance offered by Asterisk 11, it will, still, be the domain of the specialised few and not the masses, due to the difficulties and dedication required to get it up and running for the majority of businesses.

For those few businesses who utilise Asterisk the benefits are obvious. But for the rest of the business world wanting to enter the Voip marketplace and receive the benefits of cheap and free phone calls, unrivalled audio quality and incredible versatility, simply choose a reputable Voip provider with a proven track record & ITSPA approval.
