Pocket Tools For Managers

By Dawn Sanchez

Let me present myself: John, main manager for a computer company. Our company are doing jobs related to software programming. Our main projects are all high-end ones. Example: the last big contract we had was for some surveillance software to be used by the city. We spent over 1 year polishing the software. Many hours were spent on it. Now we are working on smaller jobs.

As a manager, five people are under me. They are programmers with very good backgrounds. We do specialize ourselves in projects for Windows, Linux and Mac. We are also working the weekends and the staff currently doing that shift are two part-time students. Both of them are also assigned to the evening tasks. My current contract involves a very polished web site. The customer simply wants the best portal around with all the fuzz possible. Since we started working on it, there have been many polishing done on the software. This customer is very close to his project.

My company only uses high end equipments including the printers and office tools. In order to keep ourselves updated on the tasks and schedule, I gave all the programmers a HP iPAQ 4155 Pocket. This small gadget is incredible. Communication outside the workplace works great with it. I simply need my programmers to be kept up to date almost seven days a week. I cannot afford to have a sick employee and leave the others without the right information about the project.

It did happen last year. My main programmer had to stay home for a whole two weeks. We were simply too tight on the schedule to make everything up to date. Thankfully, the employee was able to give proper guidance. Such thing rarely happens. Everything is very well documented. That day, we simply had no time to check back everything. The customer was waiting and we were sweating. Since then I made sure everyone is up to date about the project and all the details are clearly understood.

My company has been in business since 5 years so far. We grew up slowly and gained good fame for our quick deliverance. We have regular customers. I do spend lots of time with them reviewing the specifications and a lot more. The office is located in the downtown near the business district. It is a nice working place. I love my job a lot !
