Overdue 4G Auction to net Expected 3.5 Billion

By Saul Saresi

After years of waiting and months of speculation, the dates for the UK 4G auction have been announced by communications watchdog Ofcom - and its music to the ears of the UK government - who are expecting the sale to generate a windfall in excess of 3.5 Billion.

And as well as being a welcome relief to the government, the news also couldn't come a moment too soon for the service providers left trailing in the wake of Everything Everywhere's early adoption of the 4G network. Now, at least, the lucky auction winners will be able to activate their new networks by March 2013.

There are, of course, certain procedures stipulated by Ofcom that all competing companies must adhere to before being able to bid for the 4G mobile network. These stipulations include making a 100,000 deposit by 11th of December to be submitted alongside their completed application forms.

But now that all the procedures and formalities have been completed, O2 and Vodafone will be desperate to ensure that their 4G networks are fully operational in the shortest possible time-frame to make up lost ground on rivals Everything Everywhere, who launched the first 4G network at the end of 2012.

And the new 4G network will also give British businesses the chance to catch up to their European rivals who have been enjoying the benefits of 4G technology for over a year - a long time in business.

Once the systems have been rolled out, employees will be able to work at a much higher speed, downloading documents on the move, and utilising mobile Voip technology to enable remote working and vastly improved video and audio communications.

The auction couldn't come a moment too soon for Britain's economy, with the expected 3.5 billion providing a significant amount of funds for government re-distribution. However, there has been serious pressure placed on the government to ensure that at least some of the windfall is re-invested back into the telecommunications sphere from whence it came.

With the expected growth rate of mobile Voip set to skyrocket in the next year, the introduction of 4G networks across the UK could not come soon enough. Hopefully now we can, at last, look forward to the same level of internet connection that our Western-world neighbours have taken for granted for so long.
