Modern Day Fleet Tracking

By Corney S. Richardson

Fleet tracking is the use of GPS technology to identify, locate and maintain contact reports with one or more fleet vehicles in real-time. Immediate access to the location history of individual fleet vehicles allows precisely timed-managed, current and forward journey planning, responsive to travelling conditions. A GPS fleet tracking system could improve the efficiency, profitability and/or safety of most business vehicle fleets. Almost any business that relies on its fleet of vehicles should consider the benefits of a GPS tracking system. A tracking system could be a solution for any company that would like to track where the vehicles are during the day or have a dispatch function that could be more efficiently fielded.

Vehicle tracking systems are commonly used by fleet operators for fleet management functions such as fleet tracking, routing, dispatch, on-board information and security. Along with commercial fleet operators, urban transit agencies use the technology for a number of purposes, including monitoring schedule adherence of buses in service, triggering changes of buses' destination sigh displays at the end of the line (or other set location along a bus route), and triggering pre-recorded announcements for passengers.

It is being reported that business groups be it a small or a large group have flourished and witnessed decent increase in efficiency due to introduction of this technology into their system. Those businesses that have opted for it have experience better response from their customers. The satisfaction level of fleet respondents has been 73%, which is a great response for businesses that have adopted this technology.

Not only increased efficiency but there is some other valid reasons that businesses have cited for increased growth. Some of other reasons are reduced service response times, reduction in fleet related operating costs, increase service related productivity, extension of service vehicles life.

Industries not traditionally known to use vehicle tracking systems (logistics and transportation industries are the ones that have traditionally incorporated vehicle tracking system into their operations) have started to use it in creative ways to improve their processes or businesses. The hospitality industry have caught on to this technology to improve their customer service. For example, a luxury hotel in Singapore have been known to install vehicle tracking system in their limousines to ensure they can welcome their VIPs when they reach the hotel. Vehicle tracking systems have also been used in food delivery and car rental companies.
