The use of geographical data is becoming a significant part of our daily lives. The internet has become an important technological mechanism for GIS location-based activities. As a result, the internet has become the preferred means of real-time delivery of geographical information.

Today, internet users are able to download internet-based innovative spatial data in the form of digital map layers consisting of geographic information system (GIS) features resulting in easy to understand digital mapping. Access to networked spatial data has resulted in the use of location-based services for a variety of purposes. It is now common to find a broad range of downloadable map-based applications and data sets online. Innovative spatial data for navigation and internet location-based applications can now be used by anyone needing real-time delivery of geographical information.

The use of web mapping has evolved to the point where users can access an internet platform to find out exactly where they are, how to get a particular location, and to help them find the best route to the location. Today, we are now seeing incredibly powerful geospatial tools online which have improved Spatial data collaboration, increased speed and power, provided effective online analysis, and provided more data in an easy to understand output to improve a user's understanding of the data. With the advances of wireless connectivity, position sensing, and mobile devices, the market for location-based services is rapidly increasing. For instance, wireless emergency services with wireless capabilities that allows the pinpointing of a cell phone is in great demand as an essential service. As well, businesses can provide the exact directions to their location.

The internet has had a remarkable effect on the way businesses and individuals communicate.
