Free Mobile phones and Talk Time

By Harold Steves

A basic cell phone service with limited facilities will cost at least 30 dollars per month. New model cell phones with slim and sleek designs flood the market frequently. They are as posh as their features in their cost too. A person with an average or low income cannot afford to buy these expensive phones. Even if they do so, they cannot pay the mounting monthly bills. But it is very hard to manage todays life without a mobile phone connection.

Cell phones can act as real life savers in case of emergencies. They can be very useful in day to day life other than being used for communication and fun. That is the reason, the US government decided to provide free cell phones for people living below poverty line. People who are not eligible to buy cell phones on their own can get free government phones under this scheme. They can also get free talk time which can be used in time of emergencies.

Any individual, who is residing in US, has a postal address and receives help under the Federal Assistance programs like food stamps, SSI or any other program is eligible to get free government phones. The person should apply for the phone through the SafeLink Wireless services. They check certain criteria like total monthly income, age, disability status, living conditions and dispatch the phone within a week to the given postal address.

These phones will have up to one hour free talk time per month. If these minutes are not used within the particular month, they will be added along with the next months free minutes. If the person wants more talk time, they can recharge with TracFone cards. People can make nationwide calls using this phone at a cheap rate. They can retain the phone with them for their life time even, if they choose to sign out of Federal Assistance programs due to good fortune or discontinue the SafeLink Wireless services and start using some other service provider.

The purpose of this program is to provide poor people with affordable communication services. These free talk time and free government phones are provided by the TracFone Company. This program received a very positive response from the people and millions use it daily. But still many poor people are not aware of such a scheme, as it is not advertised widely.
