What About The LG 47LE5900?

By Pat Allen

The recently released LG 47LE5900 is a slim 47 inch LED television that supports high definition video, internet connectivity, and other features, making it something to be noticed. It is the second largest in a new range of televisions based on the new competitor on the flat screen market, LED technology.

Flat screen products have saturated the marketplace with an abundance of choices, which can be slightly bewildering for consumers. With the array of LCD and plasma televisions currently available, the newer LED technology has really only come in from the cold recently. Using a series of Light Emitting Diodes (LEDs) to make up the colors onscreen, LED technology is able to produce more intense, saturated colors. Another benefit of this technology is that the nature of it reduces the possibilities of product or part failure.

Digital television is a technology that provides better quality video and sound, and supports a range of new channels and viewing options depending on your coverage area. The 47LE5900 features a built in High Definition digital tuner, removing the need to purchase a separate set top box. Full High Definition 1080p picture resolution is supported, providing the highest quality of picture currently available. The 47LE5900 has a screen refresh rate of 100Hz, which reduces motion blur and other problems with other technologies.

For the ultimate in connectivity, consumers can connect the LG 47LE5900 to the internet, either by accessing an existing broadband service via Ethernet cable, or by using a WiFi attachment. Called NetCast by LG, this facility allows you to stream video, and other content, as well as access sites like Youtube, and utilise Skype.

The above connectivity is provided without requiring a connection to a computer. The television's DLNA standard (Digital Living Network Alliance), consumers can connect directly to computers and other devices. This enables them to access videos and music from their computer - provided it is protected by Digital Rights Management (DRM).

Most consumers have been able to connect their digital cameras and camcorders to televisions for many years, provided they have an output connector. This process is now aided, as the LG television supports USB input, allowing users to easily connect their devices to display their photos and videos directly. Video input via HDMI is supported with four ports.

While the LED television technology has been around for a few years, most consumers have been waiting for it to hit the mainstream, with the inherent price drop and technical evolution. As more and more manufacturers start releasing products, consumers will find that there are cheaper and better-featured products coming onto the market.

The decision to step in and buy a new television is a big investment for most families, and ultimately the choice has to be made based on what you want to get out of the product, and what features you require. For the moment at least the LG 47LE5900 is a well designed television at the upper end of the screen size spectrum, with features that places it at the forefront of current technology.
