Things To Consider When Shopping For Android Tablets

By Anne Harvester

Android tablets are an essential device for people who wish to take their music, photos, PDFs and other files with them. These days, there are a variety of them flooding the market that picking the right one for you can be confusing. So if you're thinking of getting one, read on to learn some things to consider before you place that order.

The screen size should match your lifestyle. You want something small enough so you can take it with you while on the go without eating up much space. At the same time, you want it large enough so you may view your files and applications clearly. Usually, these units come in 10-, 7- and 5-inch screens.

While there are many with multi-touch screens, there are still models with single touch support. Something with a single touch capability allows you to perform only basic operations with your finger, such as clicking on an icon or scrolling. If this is the tablet you're eyeing, it's better off with a stylus and of course a slot for it somewhere in the device's body.

The screen must also sport a resolution that's decent enough. If you're thinking of using the unit as a document reader, this is an important consideration. If the one you're eyeing got a screen resolution below 1280 x 760 pixels, then PDF files, magazine pages and others with text may not appear crisp enough. Also, check out other essential screen specs like the viewing angle and brightness.

Your experience with the tablet is affected mostly by the processing speed it boasts of. If you want it to have superb performance, go for a unit carrying not less than a 1GHz processor. But you should also carefully weigh the pros and cons as a processor that's super speedy can also drain you battery life faster.

Speaking of battery, it's important for the device to offer long battery life for uninterrupted use. Many models these days may be charged via USB so there's little need to put up with the included power supply all the time. It's for this reason why going for something with a mini USB port is nice. Other than for charging, it also allows you to plug in a flash drive or hook up the device to your computer.

If you treasure a lot of digital files and apps, the internal storage size should be spacious enough for all of them. Some units come with slots wherein you can slide in a memory card for expansion. But if one doesn't come with the package, getting a separate memory card should be part of your budget.

Other than the appearance of the body, you should also inspect the quality of it. Place the unit in your hands and feel it while taking a good look at its front, back and sides. Check if the construction is solid enough or if the plastic it's made of is of high-quality. See if there are three buttons next to the screen for hassle-free operation. Many also come with integrated cameras. Such is an important feature to have especially if the unit is capable of making and receiving calls.

Prior to heading out to the gadget store, spend some time online going through product reviews. This will help you decide which of the android tablets out there you should go for.
