The Performance Of Certain Anti-Virus Software Is Very Questionable

By Matthew Hansen

Computer viruses cause a lot of problems with our computers. And anti-virus software programs are not all of equal quality either. Add to this the problems we have with mal-ware and spy-ware and the money spent is huge, plus the added hours of time wasted.

Anti-virus software programs can range from very good to very bad. Many of the best known programs aren't successful in removing even the most common computer viruses we encounter.

I don't think that I ought to actually mention business names but I would encourage you to talk to other technicians that work on computers about their opinions... you might be surprised with what they tell you. Once, after working for hours on problems involving a static IP, we discovered that the virus protection software was actually causing the problem. The ISP's tech guy working with me, told me that they had encountered a lot of problems with this "best" known virus program... and they don't use it or promote its use.

Also, I have asked more than one geek at repair shops what they recommend and have gotten some good advice as well as heard a few bad stories about these well known companies. And I've seen this personally in more than one PC that I have worked on and had to replace the existing anti-virus to clean up the computer's problems.

I will tell you that I've had good luck working with Avast and AVG programs as well as a couple of others that have done real good for me. The point I like best about Avast is its "boot scan". What that does is perform a scan of your computer before Windows comes on.. in DOS. That way it will search the data files in their raw state. It seems to locate viruses that the others don't.

After viruses the biggest performance issue I see with computers is in optimizing the registry. Our experience with some of the registry cleaning software has been outstanding as well. Reading other testimonials can be a good method of helping you with your research and decision.
