3G Technology Enhances Mobile Internet Connections

By Bindu Srinivasan

Internet has been and will always be a great tool for communication. Since the first time it was used to share data within a research facility, people have found new ways to use the world wide web for their convenience.

We all laughed when Homer Simpson the bumbling lovable father from the hit animated series 'The Simpsons' once said "They have the internet on computers now?" But with the way internet technology is making advances we may be saying that of a lot of things to come.

Every day there are new advances in technology that bring the world closer together. IT is not as difficult to conduct business locally as well as internationally, which increases the need to be more and more mobile with regards to communication.

It is very important for the modern tech-savvy businessperson to have access to email and internet on-the-go. Earlier laptops used to be a luxury, but have become quite commonplace these days. But even with a laptop, there is the need to have a wireless internet card or to be within the range of an available Wifi network.

Mobile internet was made a lot easier when it was introduced on cell phones. CDMA , GSM as well as 2G internet connections allow the user to connect to the internet for a particular price as decided by the Service Provider. These connections have good enough speed to allow users to make video phone calls, as well as surf the internet.

Most of these phones use Enhanced Data GSM Environment (EDGE) technology which is a high speed mobile data standard. This is the same technology as is used by BlackBerry. This technology works well with BlackBerry for connecting to the internet because of the differences between BlackBerry and other phones. However large data transfers may not be as simple when using other phones.

This is where 3G technology comes in. 3G or Third Generation is a generation of standards for mobile phones and telecommunications. 3G mobile internet offers greater networking capabilities which enable wireless video conferences, video calling and high speed data transfers.

3G technology offers download speeds of up to 2 Mbps which even allows for live streaming so that you can watch TV shows on your mobile phone. It is definitely a step up from its predecessor 2G that did not permit such high speed transfers.

These days a lot of people are buying Smart phones and touch phones as compared to the normal user friendly phones that we were used to in the Indian market. It is only with the activation of 3G that the full potential of these phones can be unlocked.

There are a number of Service Providers in India that are set to release their 3G network plans soon. Along with these there are already existing government telecom companies that offer 3G services.
