Five Reasons Businesses Utilise Virtual Servers To Power Their Internet Presence

By Socorro Clayton

Virtual servers are a fantastic technology for the web developer or host that is working on a budget. Although Linux virtual servers and Windows virtual servers are the most popular, virtual servers come in many different forms.

Voice servers make lots of use of virtual servers. Voice server hosts like to cater for all over the world, with locations such as London, several US locations and Canada. Virtual servers offer themselves as the perfect choice. The cost of renting several dedicated servers can soon add up. Virtual servers are a fraction of the cost and thus allow a host to have a worldwide presence.

Website hosting is perhaps the most popular use for virtual hosting. Particularly with hosting companies starting out that can't make the jump to a dedicated server. A VPS that is well setup will have a redundant hard disk array, as well as CPU and memory on demand. If you are hosting one or two websites, a VPS is also ideal.

The up and coming trend is to use virtual servers for social media apps. If you use Facebook you will know exactly what I am talking about. Facebook applications are all the craze. You can do everything from managing an army, to a record company! Virtual servers are perfect for hosting these apps.

Virtual servers are very often used for database environments. You should never have all your eggs in one basket. Using a VPS keeps databases offsite and safe.

Virtual hosting is very often used for DNS. Just recently I setup a slave DNS server on a virtual server, at the fraction of the cost of doing it in-house. The benefit of this is that our main DNS is hosted on our web servers. Should primary DNS go offline, secondary DNS kicks in. This allows for total service!

So there you have the 5 main uses for virtual servers. If you can add any weird and wonderful things you have utilised them for, please do let us know below.
