Playing And Enjoying CCG Games

By Michelle Howe

Card games these days go far beyond what can be played with a simple standard deck. While it will never go out of style to sit down to play poker or blackjack with a group of friends, more complex options are gaining popularity. If you are interested in learning more about what is out there, checking out CCG games is a great way to get started.

Also known as Collectible Card Games, CCGs are those that are played through assembly of a personalized deck that is chosen from a pool of specialized, themed cards. Pre-assembled decks are available to start off with, although many people prefer to put together their own from individual elements. Sometimes they combine the two options, beginning with a starter deck and customizing it bit by bit until they find it perfect.

A game may center around a theme that has been written specifically for it, without an outside source. The popular CCG Magic: The Gathering is probably the most prominent example of these. With this type, characters and story are original, rather than being adapted from another source.

However, there are many popular types that spring from properties that already exist, like video games, television shows, and comic books. The online game World of Warcraft, the movie and television series Star Trek, and Marvel superheroes all have cards that fit into their respective universes. Each individual card in a game like this is likely to represent a character or other feature that is already known to the player through another source, and must therefore fit in reasonably well with the fiction as it has already been written.

Like any other game, the rules will vary from type to type, but a few things are common between most of them. They tend to move in phases, which usually involve preparing and then executing movements according to the cards that are in a player's hand. There is usually an endgame toward which all players are moving, whether that is simply eliminating all other competitors or reaching a previously determined goal or milestone.

Many varieties have tournaments devoted to them, in which numerous people may compete at a higher level. These can get very large, even extending to an international scale, especially when more popular titles are involved. For people who would like to expand their hobby to more than a small circle of friends, this is a fantastic opportunity.

If money or time is a concern, the online option offered by many of these games is quite attractive. Assembling a virtual deck can still get pricey, but it is usually easier to keep under control. Even better, the convenience of not having to physically seek out matches means that it is much easier to find a game whenever you like.

Gaming does not always have to be paired with collecting things, but when it is, many people find it irresistible. If you are one of those people, you have many options to get started researching CCG games today. Try a few out and see which ones you like the best, then have fun perfecting your deck!
