Details About A Freelance Copy Writer

By Michelle Howe

Copy writing involves writing text for advertising or marketing of a person, idea, opinion, business or product. The goal is to persuade readers of this text to subscribe to a particular viewpoint or purchase a product that is being advertised. The professionals who do this job are given the title of copy writers. An individual who does not work for a particular business but operates independently is known as a freelance copy writer.

These writers have a range of tasks to complete as part of their jobs. Typically they are assigned to projects related to tagline creation, jingle lyrics, online advertisements, web page content, direct mail pieces, radio or television scripts, brochures, catalogs, white papers, social media, press releases, billboards, sales letters and more. Essentially, these workers are largely involved with marketing communication.

Content written for a website is done with the intent to improve ranking on results pages of search engines. This is considered search engine optimization, or SEO, that is organic. The process includes repeating key words and phrases on a website. This is done in a strategic manner and usually reads casual and normal to viewers.

Generally, those who work in this industry are employed by organizations, including ad agencies, cable providers, magazines, large stores, book publishers, ad departments, PR firms, broadcast providers, book publishers, newspapers, and ad agencies. The freelancer acts as an independent contractor when looking for work. These people may be hired to do a range of projects for varying clients and may even do some jobs for copy writing agencies that offer proof reading, social media, layout, development editing, writing, design, SEO, fact checking and other services.

Freelance or not, these professionals often work as a creative group. Many times they are paired up with art directors. The writer handles the verbal and textual content. They are expected to tell stories that will resonate with potential viewers and illicit a specific response emotionally. The art director would be more focused on visual communication and may do production oversight.

This job is similar to that of technical writers. Sometimes the two positions will overlap. Technically writing, broadly speaking, is concerned with informing its readers, not necessarily persuading. Therefore, copy writers may be assigned to drafting an ad to sell a car and technical writers would be given the job of writing the operating manual for said car.

The Internet has greatly expanded the opportunities for this position. Emails, web content and other online media require such services. The web has also made it easier for these writers to learn the skill, view work of competitors and conduct research. Furthermore, employers and potential workers can easily connect through the web. Technology has also increased the amount of freelancing work available, making this a competitive field, especially in certain markets and specialties.

Copy writing is used primarily as a tool for marketing. The professionals who do this job must write text for advertising and marketing purposes. Individuals may work for an agency or company. There is also a freelance copy writer who works independently, contracting out his or her own jobs. The popularity of the web has increased the number of opportunities in this industry and also made the field competitive.
