Facebook Set to Rule the World of Voip

By Saul Saresi

The big, blue, all powerful social networking site has announced that it intends to enter the world of Voip technology in an attempt to de-throne market leaders Skype by offering users a more flexible and improved free platform.

In the past 10 years since Skype first entered the Voip marketplace, their have been several challengers made to its throne from the biggest industry players, ranging from Google to MSN, but none have been able to tempt customers away from Skypes incredibly popular business model.

However, of all the companies to have attempted to encroach on Skype's dominance, Facebook are certainly the most well equipped and well placed to do so. And it would seem to be a logical progression for the book to enter the Voip marketplace and take advantage of the platform already in place.

And so it would seem like all of the foundations are in place to provide the perfect platform through which its users could can connect with one another given the right resources - namely a Voip network. Added to this the many other benefits that the book already offers such as video and picture options, and the advantages are clear to see.

All of which could result in a very interesting battle at the top of the tree. And Facebook will also be spurred on by the knowledge that the advertising model demonstrated by Skype has proven itself to be significantly more profitable than that of F-book, something the book would be very keen to emulate.

Presently, Skype's paying users currently spend an average of $100 per year on Skype Out (Skype's premium service) and other services, compared to Facebook's advertiser revenue for Europe and North America (from where it gets almost all of its advertising) of less than $10 per user.

But all of this speculation and potential is nothing more than hear-say at the present time, and there is a lot of ground to be made up before any accurate assumptions can be made. Added to that the fact that Skype now have the full power and backing of Microsoft, and the stage is set for what maybe the most hotly fought telecommunications battle in living memory.

But one thing is for certain, neither company are going to take any prisoners, and both have the resources to do what is necessary to usurp the other in a bid for market dominance. But whatever happens, things are shaping up nicely to develop into one heck of a battle.
