How to Break Into Fashion Journalism

The Fashion Industry is huge. There are so many facets to this industry, that there are always openings for new talent. If you like fashion, and you like to write, then you might consider a career in Fashion Journalism. A career in this field is fascinating, exciting and very rewarding. Your first step will be to enroll in communication school.

In 1892 Vogue Magazine started the first publications in Fashion Journalism. They contained articles written by employees who attended the fashion shows. Along with these articles, sketches of the fashions would be presented. La Gazette du Bon Ton was the second publication, but only ran from 1912 to 1925. Today there are many top fashion journalist writing for top fashion publications.

If it is your desire to become a Fashion Journalist, then you need to start with your education first. Getting your communications degree will be the first step. You will need to take courses in writing, journalism, Basic English, and other related subjects. You will have to develop a descriptive way of writing to keep the readers attention.

To stay one step ahead, you should try to get some experience before you finish school. Look for openings at local newspapers and magazines. Volunteer to write for the college paper, or local businesses. Practice makes perfect, and the best way to practice is by getting plenty of hands on experience.

Internships are often available through the larger publishing companies. They are willing to share their experience, tips, techniques and methods with new writers. Often times you can start your career with the same company, since you will already be trained in their methods. Fashion publishing companies are always looking for new talent.

Networking with professionals in your field is a great source of information, no matter what business you are in. Getting to know some of the best Fashion Journalists, taking their advice, and watching how they work can be of great value.
