Facebook Wonders

By Marion Ortiz

Facebook pages today are everywhere. They are advertised on news stations, TV channels, commercials, and in magazines. it has left its fingerprints all over the media and throughout society.

It first came to the surface in February 2004 but was limited to only colleges and universities in the Boston area. By July 2010, it had more than 500 million users in only six years later. it features started by solely creating a personal profile page to joining multiple groups, sharing and posting articles, and creating "fan" pages.

It was created by Mark Zuckerberg, a computer science major and his college roommates and classmates, Eduardo Saverin, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes during his sophomore year at Harvard. The site was limited to only Harvard students at first but later expanded to other schools and universities in the area. Later the expansion spread to high school students and then spread further to anyone over the age of thirteen.

It's usage popularity caught on and spread like wildfire. It quickly surpassed other social networking sites, like MySpace, out of the water. it's features and capabilities, networking wise, were more effective than MySpace because of the vast social networking web that is created.

It's features are endless. Some of these features include designing your own personal or business profile, adding friends and contacts, searching and becoming "fans" of different interests, creating your own "fan" or "group" pages, and posting or "sharing" different articles or videos. The social web or network you create for yourself is absolutely amazing. It is a great way to meet new people, keep in touch with old friends from high school or family members that live far away, and even start your own "group" or "fan" page on something you are passionate about.

One reason why it became more successful than MySpace is the business world really caught on to it. All kinds of businesses, organizations, stores, and even schools can be found on it. Even news stations and TV shows will tell their audiences to "Find Us on it". This is what made it so huge.

Another feature is the ability to "friend" other users. When creating a personal profile, you can fill in the fields with information on where you work, your school, your hometown, and where you even went to school. Each time you log in, it will suggest "people you may know" based on the organizations you are associated with and have filled in your fields.

Another popular it feature is its "friends" suggestions. Once you add your place of employment, hometown, or school, it will suggest friends or coworkers for you to add to your contact list as it reads and recognizes the common interests between you and another contact. Imagine over 500 million users connected to 500 million users. One can clearly see how it has affected our society. It has made us closer and opened communication among us. Social networking sites have made our world smaller and opened and connected ourselves more closely. It's amazing how a small idea became so big.
