The main key to success whenever using a tanning lotion or cream is spreading the product evenly on the body so that it does not have dark or light areas. Additionally, the area on the body should be exfoliated first. This can ensure that the user will get a tan which is very even looking.

Always moisturize any areas which are dry and rough to increase the chances of success. This usually includes the elbows and knees. Exfoliating and moisturizing should begin several days before you plan to apply the lotion. Doing this will help the lotion adhere to the skin much easier.

Right before applying the lotion, it is suggested to shower first and use a mild body wash. It will smooth out the rough areas as well as removing any dead skin cells. Also, it's advised to wax or shave your legs also to make sure they are at their absolute smoothest before beginning the process.

Whenever actually applying these products, always stored in a single area and apply to your skin as smoothly as possible. Make sure that you are avoiding your toes and fingers because these areas don't tan effectively. Whenever finished, make sure everything is thoroughly dry before you touch any surfaces including your clothes or other objects. This process will usually take around an hour or so.

Lastly, soon after using the self tanner always clean the hands carefully using water and soap. This will help to prevent turning the hands an orange shade. In addition, it is advisable to test out a smaller area of the skin first.
