5G Wireless is Here

By Daniel Stouffer

Don't hold your breath, because it seems that the future has arrived ahead of time. The public is about to be introduced to what is being dubbed the 5G wireless, a revolutionary new service which may finally bring together the fragmented North American cellular industry, at long last.

If you are fascinated by the major upgrades to the Apple iPhone or the newcomer on the block, the Google Android, then you will know that 3G connectivity and the arrival of the smart phone represented a major step forward within the cellular industry. We are likely to look differently at our personnel phones in the future, however, as significant improvements to be introduced by the 5G revolution will represent a huge leap forward for us.

The difference between the phone of today and the 5G phone seems to be the hybrid style of service, which will feature voice over Internet protocol, also known as VOIP. Using this method, quality will be much higher and data may be transferred very quickly indeed. Therefore, transfer rates will go through the roof and the whole service will be much more efficient as larger volumes can be transferred that much more efficiently.

Even more exciting perhaps then the enhancements in service, is the fact that new delivery methods combined with the most cutting edge equipment available will give the consumer a vast array of choices. Whilst we have already moved quite far in terms of viewing the cell phone as just a talking device, the new era will see the phone becoming more of a personal assistant/PDA with astonishing features, accessibility and flexibility.

You will be able to hold a very powerful miniature computer in your hand when tomorrow's 5G wireless phone arrives. Due to the increased bandwidth available through the VoIP protocols, you will be able to download feature-length movies in a matter of minutes. Once you have done this, simply connect the phone to your jumbo TV at home and you can watch movies in high definition, virtually doing away with the need for video rental stores overnight.

In addition to increased function, 5G wireless will shrink the world. No longer will it be necessary to worry about whether your phone will work if you travel overseas, or whether you are hitting the correct frequencies. No longer will you have to worry about very expensive international call rates and roaming will be a thing of the past. International phone calls will essentially be conducted as if they were local.

Whilst the 5G wireless service will certainly answer many of the criticisms that have been leveled at the cellular industry for so long, it falls to the phone manufacturers to ride this wave and produce the best, cutting edge equipment for the consumer of tomorrow.

If 5G is here, what happened to 4G? Can this technology be so advanced that it just leapfrogs? We should all wonder what is next in the cellular world.
