Can You Be Getting Better Solutions From Your Web Hosting Company?

By Daniel Handler

With any product or service you should always see if you are getting value for money. This does not necessarily mean spending as little as possible. What it should mean is looking at how much you are paying and seeing if you can get the same or a better level of quality and service elsewhere. This is as true with a UK web hosting provider as it is with any other type of product or service.

If you are considering changing your reseller hosting provider then you need to ask why this is. For example there may be a number of technical issues with the site. They may not have the level of technical support you require or you may want more disc space or bandwidth for the amount you are paying. These are all issues to consider.

However these should not be the only things to consider. For example you may have had problems on your current site. If you are on a shared server this may not necessarily be the fault of your website.

Where this becomes complicated is if there is one that gets more traffic than the others. This can then affect the performance of other users on that particular server. With the disc space issue this can depend on the provider.

However this can mean that if one client is significantly larger then their larger amount can have an adverse effect on the running of other websites on the shared server. There is also the potential problem of a provider overselling. This means they may have a certain amount of disc space for 100 or so clients but sell to 150 clients because they assume that people will not use their full allocation of disc space.

Reliability is another issue. A larger provider is not always necessarily a better one, especially if they are taken over as this will often lead to an awkward period of transition. This is why you should carefully choose and do background research on the various providers available.

When approaching a possible provider you should have a clear idea of how much you are willing to spend and what your requirements are. Having a budget will help to narrow down the options and help you compare what is available in your price range. Some offer a trial period with a money back guarantee. This is a good way to test their services and to see if they offer a package that is suitable.

Ideally you want a provider that is capable of resolving issues and offers technical support as part of the package rather than as an additional cost. If a provider says they offer excellent support but do not specify whether this is an additional cost you should ask them about this specifically. A good provider should be prepared to give you the information you need.

When contacting UK web hosting companies you should know how much you are prepared to spend. This should help you find ones that are in your price range and will make it easier to compare the different quotes on offer. It is also a good idea to look for customer feedback in order to see who offers the best overall value for money.
